Rarely seen or noticed nowadays in Edinburgh’s Old Town you’ll still find, above windows and inside shop doorways in the Old Town, the painted remnants of merchants still quietly advertising businesses long gone. Sale rooms, Hatters, Importers of rush baskets, Associations and Societies of tradespeople and urban philosophers, all long gone, their painted banners vanishing under those of the shops and organisations which replaced them

I have revealed Auld Reekie hidden behind graceful Edinburgh culture, using a fine Adams building as the very fabric of the Athens of the North, turning it into a billboard of what life was really like for the busy, bustling citizens.

Third in the Myth & Legend series.

A modern take on the story based on the story of Samson and his encounter with the Lion at Timnah.

I wanted to modernise the piece by linking the title of the print with the words Samson uses in Judges that the “ Lord (God) give him the strength” to overcome the Philistines, and the saying people use today i.e. “ God give me strength!” to overcome some obstacle. The other part that links the past with the present is the mention of Honey an important foodstuff and (medicine) used by man and nature for all time, by making the piece into a label for a product I was able to incorporate the myth within the graphics thus bringing it up to date.

Reading the work right to left, we see Hebrew text going clockwise telling the part of the story where Samson encounters the Lion at the vineyards at Timnah, kills it then later finds bees nesting within the carcass and have produced Honey which he proceeds to eat. I have removed most of the text and left in the main points of the story, as not to clutter the piece, within the centre of the Hebrew text I have set the archetypal symbols of the 'hero' fighting the lion, this symbolism highlights the same conflict Hercules and Gilgamesh go through within their myth/legend.

Moving to the left of the piece I have substituted some of the information of a jam label with facts of the myth/legend reference to where was situated, the time scale in which Samson gives the Philistines to figure out the riddle he sets them and the wager.

This piece was the start of a series that looked at the idea of repeating an image something similar to what Andy Worhol did, instead of the banal, ordinary, I produced pieces that I had made, from the purely imaginary to places I had experinced. Giving them a personal feel to them, not the impersonal, that Mr Worhol gave his repetitive pieces.
